The ESCS Chair in “Communication, Literacy, and Citizenship” has been favorably evaluated by UNESCO.
The application for the creation of a UNESCO Chair in Communication, Media Literacy, and Citizenship at ESCS (School of Communication and Media Studies) / Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon was favorably evaluated by UNESCO. The agreement signed between ESCS / IPL and the United Nations organization will be valid for the next four years. Coordinated by Fernanda Bonacho and João Abreu, the Chair in Communication, Media Literacy, and Citizenship is the first UNESCO Chair specialized in Communication and Media Literacy in Portugal. The objectives of the ESCS Chair are aligned with the 2030 Agenda and UNESCO’s 2022-29 strategy and will work to:

  1. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, aiming to reduce inequalities and promote learning and creative societies.
  2. Promote science, technology, innovation, and natural heritage towards sustainable societies and environmental protection.
  3. Promote freedom of expression, cultural diversity, global citizenship education, and protect heritage to build inclusive, just, and peaceful societies.
  4. Develop and disseminate knowledge, skills, and ethical standards to foster a technological environment that serves humanity.
