UNESCO Chair

The UNESCO Chair in Communication, Media Literacy and Citizenship, at ESCS-IPL, aims to integrate research and education in society in order to develop fundamental skills to communicate and understand the world critically.

This is the first UNESCO Chair in Portugal in the area of ​​Communication and Media Literacy.

The ESCS Chair is aligned with UNESCO principles, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16 and 17.

The main objectives of the Chair are:

  • Promote communication for inclusive, multicultural, equal and democratic societies;
  • Develop media and information literacy;
  • Promote active citizenship and civic engagement.

The Chair’s main areas of intervention include: advanced training in communication and citizenship; the promotion of applied research on the effects of information and media on society; and national and international cooperation with a view to sharing good practices.
