The UNESCO Chair of Communication, Media and Information Literacy and Citizenship<\/a> (ESCS-UPL<\/a>\/LIACOM<\/a>) is in Paris, at UNESCO headquarters, for the annual Digital Learning Week<\/strong><\/a> conference, this year dedicated to the theme \u201cEducation in the age of AI: Facts | Frictions | Frontiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ESCS\/LIACOM UNESCO Chair is represented at the event by two ESCS professors and researchers from the Applied Research Laboratory in Communication and Media (LIACOM): Fernanda Bonacho, chairholder and coordinator of the Master\u2019s Degree in Journalism, and Vera Moutinho, journalist and Journalism professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Thursday, September 10, the researchers took part in a parallel session dedicated to \u201cAI across disciplines in higher education,\u201d alongside colleagues from South Africa, China and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Portuguese lecturers\u2019 presentation \u2013 \u201cBetween familiarity and verification: A pedagogical reflection on AI literacy, disinformation and journalism education\u201d \u2013 reflects on the experience of a pilot module implemented in ESCS\u2019s Multiplatform Journalism course, as part of the Erasmus+ AI-HED<\/a> project (European Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers are the only Portuguese speakers at this international event, which brings together 200 speakers from around the world, more than 1,500 in-person participants and thousands of online participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s programme<\/a> focuses on discussions around three key themes in education in the age of artificial intelligence (AI): \u201cwhat counts as fact in an age of synthetic knowledge,\u201d \u201chow to navigate the frictions AI is generating across education systems,\u201d and \u201cwhat new frontiers are emerging,\u201d including issues such as \u201cpublic interest AI\u201d and \u201cdigital sovereignty,\u201d according to the website<\/a> of the conference, which is taking place from September 8 to 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the event is to \u201csupport collective sense-making and action to ensure that human agency, equity and the public purpose of education remain at the centre of education futures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chair team\u2019s participation in UNESCO\u2019s Digital Learning Week has been providing opportunities for networking and exchanging experiences with colleagues from different regions of the world, including Latin America, Africa and Asia. Among other meetings, on September 11 the researchers were invited to contribute to the \u201cStrategy Lab \u2013 Shaping UNESCO\u2019s Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for the age of AI,\u201d where guidelines for AI literacy within media literacy programmes will be discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ministerial Statement for education as a common good in the age of AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 25 ministers and designated representatives responsible for education from around the world attending Digital Learning Week adopted a Ministerial Statement<\/a> on September 8, calling for education to continue to be upheld as \u201ca human right and a common good\u201d in the age of AI, according to UNESCO<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministerial Statement \u201cacknowledges the profound shifts AI is creating, including  changes in how learners think, how teachers exercise professional judgement, and how learning is assessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While AI can bring benefits in terms of access to education and support for students, these advantages are \u201cconditional on deliberative governance, human support and adequate preparation,\u201d the officials state in the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLearning is not served when AI substitutes for human relationships and human judgement,\u201d they emphasise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Declaration identifies eight priorities for action, including \u201crestore public-interest conditions for the use of AI in education,\u201d to ensure that AI systems are auditable and subject to public oversight; \u201cprotect the development of critical understanding\u201d; \u201ccultivate teacher agency\u201d for the use of AI in their classrooms, through investment in professional development; and \u201cintegrate equity and inclusion by design\u201d into AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the governments issue three calls of action:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. To AI system providers, \u201cto provide evidence of safety and educational benefits before deployment\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. To the international community and UNESCO, \u201cto support the education systems where capacity is least developed\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. To UNESCO, \u201cto continue to convene global dialogues\u201d and \u201cinform policy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Public consultation on AI governance in education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As part of Digital Learning Week and discussions about how education systems can respond to technological change, UNESCO has released several documents<\/a> intended to provide a basis for debate on AI governance in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    UNESCO invites<\/a> experts, academics, policymakers and other stakeholders to explore the documents and contribute their perspectives. Contributions can be submitted until October 15, 2026, by email at aied@unesco.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The next edition of UNESCO\u2019s Digital Learning Week<\/a> is already scheduled for March 22\u201327, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
